| At least, the Republicans holding sway today. I certainly don't think this of moderate Republicans who have consistently shown that they'd like nothing better than to have the GOP return to the more middle-of-the-road policies of the past.
From where I sit, the American Right is currently both exclusive and meddling.
In the former, I see the Right adopting a hard-line stance of "with us or against us," rendering politics, which is by its very nature a grayscale universe, utterly black and white.
In the latter, I see the Right refusing to live and let live. This has nothing to do with who is abusing which tax dollars: it's about not letting people live by their own choices if it conflicts with what the Right sees as the "ideal."
I suspect much of what I see are consequences of the Religious Right being heavily favoured and represented, perhaps disproportionately. Additionally, these are the religious who hold to more extreme practices and beliefs; I suspect love is a secondary guiding concept, after conformity.
Am I the only one seeing this, and is it terribly skewed? I ask this question because I'm always open to adjusting my perceptions. I'm also asking because if my perception is accurate, the world has become just a little scarier. |
