Dyke is a problematic one... some lesbians prefer that term strongly, others back away from it. Not really sure on that... would need to ask one of the women on that one.
I've met quite a few of those who specifically preferred to be identified as dykes, although it's true that that's far from universal.
The "safest" terms are generally gay and lesbian.
I have yet to have anyone who was out be offended by those. And then, for racial and orientation terminology both-- ask. Among my friends of African heritage, some strongly prefer "African-American," some slightly prefer "black" but don't really mind either way, etc. I've never had anyone be offended by my asking their thoughts on the matter. It goes in the same mental file as the correct spelling and pronunciation of a person's name, in accordance with Miss Manners' rule 147, "Every person has a right to be addressed as he or she wishes." |
