M$oft is now patching their patches by TrogL 2004-12-14 14:22:17
The latest security patch for Internet Explorer (889293) creates serious problems with desktop URL shortcuts and internet links embedded in documents or emails. Clicking a link would basically hang the calling application for a couple of minutes before IE finally came up (if at all) and the browser would be blank. Links are not being followed properly from anywhere outside of IE. Uninstalling the patch corrects the problem. If you need to run Windows update on a client machine in the process of fixing other problems please remove patch 889293 from the list of patches to install.

Microsoft has issued a new version of the patch (889669) that contains the security patch 889293 plus some additional hotfixes. This new patch does not appear to cause the same problems. If installed over top of 889293 it will actually correct the problems. If you get any calls from clients that suddenly have buggy behavior from IE you can install the new patch on to their system.
