Two counterpoints by IronPIP 2004-12-14 14:18:57
One - There would still be mistakes.
Two - I just said the ends justify the means in this instance. I take it your claim is that they don't? But I say that's an inconsistent opinion.

If you believe that a life sentence is sufficient to punish and prevent murder, then shouldn't you be equally upset over the reprehensible possibility of sentencing an innocent someone to a life sentence? A life sentence is less likely to be reversed than a death sentence.

You say that the fact that a life sentence can be revoked if innocence is proven makes it much superior to the death penalty, but after ten years, or twenty, or (more likely considering how far postmortem most are exonerated) after the sentence is served, gross injustice has occured. Those who cannot afford the legal representation necessary to prove their innocence when facing death, also cannot afford the necessary legal represenation when facing longterm imprisonment.

One should not allow the emotional pull of the death of an innocent to sway one from making objective policy. Death is just and prohibitive punishment for death.
