By taking land away from Natives, the British, Mexicans, the French... Sacrificing wealth to support an army, our morals to oppress a native population that had no real hope of successfully fighting back, and individual well-being at times to ensure the society's survival.

The societal principal that says society is worth sacrificing for, is the one that says a few mistakes do not warrant discarding the death penalty. As a more extreme form of punishment than imprisonment, its positive effects outweigh the negative.
