Try this to convince yourself that you need them: go to your local hifi store and ask to try a setup that does upmixing. Put on your CD of Deep Purple's greatest hits (you DO have one, right? If not, shame on you...), and hit skip until it's ready to play Fireball. Hit play. Fall over in awe of the coolness you never knew was in the panning effects...
