You still put people away for life. by IronPIP 2004-12-14 13:38:01
And the likelihood of exonerating evidence coming forth in time to prevent a gross miscarriage of justice is about the same. I say that the difference between the number of people spared the destruction of their life by imprisonment in Canada, and the number of people spared the death penalty in America, is either so small as to be immeasurable, or possibly tilted slightly in favor of America because we try so hard to prevent the death sentence from being carried out on the innocent.

Also, I would wager that when asked which of Canada or America is the more globally influential country, the majority of people worldwide would say America. While I certainly can't attribute this to the death penalty, the overall attitudes of a people are reflected in their laws, as well as in their productivity and global position. Americans are generally willing to pay to support something greater -- our own nation. This societal impulse is a positive factor in the survival and growth of a species. It is unlikely to go away soon.
