I agree that my scenario isn't quite the same thing as a state execution. I guess my point was that there ARE situations when a society can and does authorize the taking of a human life in the interests of its own greater good.

Does the death penalty meet that criteria? I personally can't say entirely yes OR no to that one. I don't pretend to have the right answers and I won't even BEGIN to imagine that I'm more right or wrong than anybody else (on this topic, at least ;) ).
