although we have more and better safety practices now, there does seem to be an undeniable loss of freedom as far as childhood goes. Today, when a child is kidnapped in Britain, every North American mother reads about it the next day. The impression becomes that danger lurks at every corner. Being aware of what is going on with the 6 billion others on this planet doesn't necessarily help when thinking about your own neighbourhood.
For the average person, the world is probably a more peaceful place today than it ever has been (and, yes, I read the news, and for the smarty-pants out there, yes, I have read Candide). |
