XML is designed for structed data transport. XML schemas define the structure of the data. The text-based format allowed the data to be transfered between any two systems whether they match in binary format or not. For example, passing data from a database to a web browser; passing parameter data from a web browser to a web service and back.

Given that it is structured and easy to read, you will also find lots of instances where XML is used to store "relatively small" amounts of data on disk. Because of its text format is not not efficient for large amounts of data like a database would hold.

Note that this is a lot of glossing and hand waving....
