of course, I'm in the US so we don't have Boxing Day anyhow; my understanding is that is does vary provincially whether or not it is a statutory holiday. But, our company does have a policy: When an official company holiday falls on a Saturday, it will be observed the Friday before. If it falls on a Sunday, it will be observed on the following Monday. Just standard procedure. It's why in the US last year we had our July 4th holiday on Monday, July 5th.
The more entertaining part for me, since I'm working with databases that talk to payroll, is that it means that our employees will all be over balance 8 hours for Calendar year 2004 on holiday time, since they will be taking a 2005 holiday (New Years Day) in calendar 2004 (December 31, 2004). It's been fun trying to deal with the fact that 35,000 people are going to get an error message.
