IIRC, there's mean people/viruses that'll change every color in the system to black, making everything esentially invisible. This used to be a minor inconvinience in 2k when some stuff wouldn't go black, but with XP's bubbly-color-everything-cause-we-want-to-ness I think it can be made to be solid black. hopefully this is just the one account?
