Wal-mart wants to open it's store starting 7 AM on Boxing Day. Because it's a Sunday, however, stores are regulated that they can only be open from 10 AM to 6 PM. I have no idea why 7-11 and other 24 hour places get the exception. Wal-mart asked the local government to change that rule so they can be open when they want. The mayor responded during the debates that he thinks people should be spending time with their families after Christmas so the 10-6 hours should stand. I have several problems with this. 1. Not everyone celebrates Christmas 2. Not everyone wants to spend the day after Christmas with family, or even has family to spend that time with 3. He owns a men's clothing business. I figure he just doesn't want to feel obliged to open his store that early. 4. What's so darned special about Sunday anyway? If Boxing Day was on any other day, I really don't think he'd care if Wal-Mart opened at 7 AM. But then, maybe he would since he doesn't want to open his store that early and is worried about the "dangerous precedent." Stupid government. Stupid mayor (actually he was voted craziest mayor in Canada - mostly because he insists that people call him "Your Worship"). Still better than Jim Pankiw, though! :)
