sentence for a guilty verdict in a murder trial. If the prisoner so convicted is ever found not guilty in an appeal, he/she can be freed. I would be far more miserable thinking I would be spending the rest of my breathing days behind bars than to know my incarceration was finite.
In a perfect justice scenario, all prisoners would be expected to perform some sort of compensated work, the proceeds of which would go to his/her victims' families. How insane is it that there is a captive population of able-bodied people sitting idle or getting pumped up for release as stronger, more insidious recidivists? If they were kept employed, they might have less time to learn new criminal strategies from the rest of the prison population.
The fact that the USA routinely convicts people younger than 18 of murder and sentences them to death is appalling. As Chris Rock observed, "how old is fifteen?" If you consider a 15-year-old who commits a crime capable of adult reasoning but not a 15-year-old who is kidnapped capable of adult reasoning, what sort of mixed message are you sending?
Another problem with the death penalty is that it is entirely dependent upon your socio-economic status as to the probabitly that it will be inflicted on you. Rich people hire crack teams of high-priced attorneys to get them acquitted. Poor people end up with underpaid public defenders. How is that equal protection under the law? |
