while left to play with no supervision.
And some became mass-murderers (or one-time murderers, still generally not a good thing), and I think a lot of that was tied to bullying, lack of friends and not making the team.
Some kids were hurt by thalidamide, got brain damage from lead paint, and died by drinking ammonia from the unprotected cupboard under the sink (although I still think most people had rubber bands on their cupboards).
Yep, you could play with anyone you wanted, as long as that person was the same race and general class as you and, as you aged, the same sex. And as long as you didn't have four-eyes, or were fat (and there were fat people before Nintendo!), or smelled funny, or had "cooties" because then the kids wouldn't play with you.
Of course, while biking over to your friends, you were at risk of being hit by a car or falling and you had no helmet to protect your head. This quite probably killed you or left you a vegetable. Same goes for a truck that flips if you're in the back or not wearing seatbelts.
But then if any of this had happened to you, you wouldn't be here to remember the glory days with rose-tinted glasses now, would you?
There is, of course, a reason that we have lawsuits, bike helmets, and a new Little League. Unsurprisingly, not everything was perfect back then and that caused changes that we live with today.
Yep, some people "learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL" by being killed or killing others. Yep, those were wonderful days.
