and his claim that the UN article addressed the right of the individual. I was trying to point out a flaw in that argument. Your reply was about the rights of the masses. That wasn't what I was talking about at all.

I agree with your assertion that the rights of individuals must be secondary to those of society as a whole. Lawbreakers who infringe upon the rights of others should be punished by giving up some of their own rights. In some cases, freedom is the right forfeited as a result of incarceration.

I sense that our opinions differ on just how far the state can go in punishing those who break the law. I'm inclined to go a little farther and hold that in some extreme cases the only punishment that fits the crime is the death penalty. You disagree. That's OK by me. I respect your opinion.
