Not only does it prevent them from repeating the crime, but it also shows the repercussions to others. Our justice system is not entirely fixated on justice and punishing the guilty, but also providing a moral deterrant to people contemplating similar crimes.
I haven't been keeping up, but a couple of thoughts on this case. One, the situation seems very well laid out, which indicates that it was premeditated. Two, there is no indication of grief. Three, knowing the possible outcome of the trial, he likely could have entered a bargain to avoid the death sentance.
I don't particularly feel the death sentance should be undertaken lightly, but there are definitely crimes which do warrant it. This being one of them. And if he's a religious person in any way, it sends him to $deity's justice that much faster.
