Ground Fault and Arc Fault devices. Can you recommend a simple one I can pickup at the local store? I don't have access to rewiring my breakers or anything. But I do know that it's plugged into an external outlet, one designed to be external, so I'm hoping the electricians that built the place was smart enough to put it on it's own circuit. Maybe a protected one.

I can find a decent surge supressor/protector but I have a feeling, based off of what you're using, that it won't be adequate enough, even for a simple small array of lights such as mine.

As far as the tree, it's a real tree. It's also not visible from outside, so as a precaution, I will shut it down at nights. But I'd like to leave my tiny bit of lights lit on the outside.
