Question about buffer overflows in MS vs *nix by romandas2004-12-14 06:14:02
Well, thoughts, to some extent... by imperito2004-12-14 06:40:40

answers the question. Undoubtedly, some nix flavours are much more secure than Windows was, but this has little to do with buffer overruns. Some of the most popular nix exploits are overrun related.

What I don't know is how modern unices protect against buffer overruns. I do know that until XP SP2, Windows had no protection. But with SP2, the kernel is built using a compiler that prevents (theoretically) buffer overruns. Then, there is the hardware and/or software dynamic overrun protection. It has some acronym, but it slips my mind.
