Some of the unix operating systems were coded with a lot more emphasis on security. OpenBSD is the best example of this, and probably the most secure OS in the world. Writing a lot of fancy user interface code like windows uses is gonna create buffer overflow problems.
As for impact, the advantage of unix comes from priv seperation. When securing an operating system, you have to consider all the servers and services that a malicious remote or local user could exploit. With stock windows, no thought at all is given to defending against the local user, and as for a remote user, if one server can be broken, the entire system is compromised, the attacker gets the powers of the server, which are typically unlimited. Contrast this to knocking over a server process on a unix machine running as a dedicated user with very limited access to system files. |
