| Question about buffer overflows in MS vs *nix |

Yesterday, we had a discussion about vulnerabilities in MS Windows vs. *nix systems. One person in our class, a Solaris admin, mentioned that the majority of vulnerabilities in MS products are buffer overflows. Our teacher replied that both MS and *nix systems have them, to which the Solaris guy stated that *nix systems do not have nearly the amount MS products do, and that its partly the design of the OS.
Specifically he stated that Solaris doesn't have as many buffer overflows and that it handles them differently even when they do occur, causing less compromising of the system than a comparable MS product.
First off, I believe I know what a buffer overflow is.. but what is it, and why is there an abundance in MS products vs. *nix ones? Are they that hard to keep out of code?
Second, how does *nix/Solaris handle them that's better than the MS way?
Can anyone answer these questions, or refer me to where I can obtain the answers? It's not homework, I'm just terminally curious :) |
