... seeing as they had to eviscerate the plot to cope with her character's absence. And she was playing a very popular character, and played her very well, and was AFAIK a quite professional member of the crew and a team-player. A classic case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Saying that she was not renewed, rather than was fired, is kind of like saying the guy wasn't killed by the 500 foot fall, but by the impact when he hit the ground.
