my in-case-of-system-crash-break-glass calculating device, which I've owned since grade 10:

It's about 6.75" (17 cm) long and fits nicely in a shirt pocket. I keep the skill up for fun. Most people were as bad at using a slide rule then as people are at using calculators now. In that respect, nothing has changed.
I made a point of being able to use every scale in multiple combinations. It's surprising what you can do with them when you study the design. By the time they were superceded by electronic calculators, slide rules were centuries old and a very mature (i.e., sophisticated) design.
