What has been your most arcane technical skill? by run.dll2004-12-12 16:22:03

Calculators? My old (ahem) slide rule by run.dll 2004-12-12 19:14:40
was a real money maker for me as I started using them just as they were becoming truely obsolete. I once got an evening of beer (well, three more pints) from three math grad friends who took up my bet that I could find the area of a circle (given the radius) faster than they could on a calculator. (There is a way, and it still works :]
The following week, another three beer (same victims) when they took me up on a bet that I couldn't do a legitimate 8 sig. fig calculation on my slide rule (legitimate = not the square root of four or similar cheesy evasion.) (Again, there is a way.)
The third week (this was at the science grad Friday happy hour) I made some _really_ preposterous claim and none of them would take me up on it, having been twice burned.
I used a slide rule for many years after they had gone the way of the dodo. There's one on the desk behind me. Still has the original batteries.
