condolences re your daughter. Terminal illness of one's child is the only case where I don't get snotty about resort to quack medicine. In a case like that, it's hard not to sympathize with a parent grasping at any straw. I have nothing but contempt for those who sell the crzp to the parents, though.
"(she's a ditz but she's a sweetheart otherwise)", been there - had a girlfriend who used to carry a little bag of crystals in her purse and once took them out and explained in detail the purpose of each one - sweet but clueless in some areas.
A lot of quackery in the past two centuries has taken on the vocabulary of science, talking about energies (first used in a quantitative scientific sense by Meyer c. 1800), frequencies (as applied to crystals, which in fact have resonant frequencies - e.g. quartz watches - but misused in this sense), and so on. You're right, arguing is often pointless. I can't recall who said that "it is pointless to use reason to dissuade a person from a stance that wasn't originally arrived at by reason" (roughly paraphrased). |
