it was last minute contract negotiations and greed. Check rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated for the timeframe to get the real deal. JMStraczynski would have to re-do the last 2 seasons to tell the story in the way he originally wanted to - the way I've heard it, the telepath arc would have started in S4. The Shadow War would still have ended in Season 3, but at the end of season 3. As most of his stories go, the thing that you think is the main plot isn't the whole point of the story.
