you mention is probably the key one. One must stop the temptation to say yes to every stranger offering candy. I have my wife's machine set up w/ Mozilla for both browsing and mail (yahoo via yahoopops) and have spybot set to run every week or so. I also tell her to leave the mouse off of that nasty blue "e".. What one has to watch for is when some process decides to change the default browser back to IE (gr...).
