It's getting up there in performance.

C++ itself is not significantly slower than C if you're using a really good compiler. (A lot of the overhead, I find, is in badly implemented exception handling, or badly written or inappropriate use of libraries).

But I think the trend is towards languages that eschew _some_ efficiency for expressiveness and syntactic or run-time sugar, for faster and safer development.

There've always been languages in that category. They're just becoming more practical for a broader scope of problems because the hardware's freaking fast and our understanding of virtual machines and compiler optimizations improves...
