I guess I can't be losing focus to itchiness if I'm focussing on finding and scratching itches... interesting idea. :-)

The problem with meditations designed to "empty your mind of thoughts/words" or some such thing is that I don't think in words to begin with, I think in shapes, and the shapes that are my thoughts are indistinguishable from the shapes that are sensory input, so I can't get empty my mind of shapes unless I have zero sensory input, which is never.

I dunno... maybe one of the things I do is already meditation and I just haven't been calling it that. I know that, if I lie down and listen to the Grateful Dead, I can let the shapes from the music drown out all the other shapes in my head (for some reason, certain Grateful Dead songs make shapes very different from everything else, which is a big part of why I like the Dead so much).

Sort of sounds like what you were saying with focussing on something instead of making your mind go blank...
