At what point is it right to by McGowan2004-12-06 18:41:19
  Suppose.... by Feng_Li 2004-12-06 20:25:28
Someone has kindapped a member of my family, and others holding him will kill him in a few hours. I have the kindapper tied to a chair. I have a knife. I need to know where my family member is being held so that he can be rescued. The kidnapper knows this information.

Is it right to torture the kindapper? I am willfully inflicting harm on another human being, which most ethical systems say is wrong.

Am I justified in torturing him? That's a trickier question. When is a person justified in wrongdoing? When does the end justify the means?

Would I torture the person? Yes.
