At what point is it right to by McGowan2004-12-06 18:41:19

Firstly, the prime reason why we are not using torture today is not the goodness of our hearts, but the fact that ordinary interrogations is so very much more efficient and reliable. A person subjected to torture would gladly confess being member of Al-Quaida and that his father was a fish if that would make the pain stop. False information is not a good thing, there is a reason why disinformation was so high on the agenda during the cold war.

Can you really conclude that bombers have no regard for human life? During WWII Norwegian partisans placed bombs all the time, killing soliders as well as civilians. I have met a couple of them, they have as high a regard for human life as any person. They just thought the Nazi occupation was A Very Bad Thing, and was willing to sacrifice some lives to defeat it.

Most people that place bombs do it to fight for some cause. You might not agree with that cause, but that is quite irrelevant - the Germans posted in Norway saw things a bit different than us natives too.

The only way squeesing information out of a cought bomber is boing to help save lives, is that he/she is part of a group with more plans for mayhem. Then they probably have friends and supporters as well, that might not be too plased to hear their friend/son/mom has been tortured. Now they don't like you much at all, and probably wouldn't mind placing a bomb in your basement themselves either, even though they might not have been willing to do so previously. Then the torture session has not only saved any lives, but most likely put far more at risk.

Most people don't just wake up one day, and out of the blue desides: "I'm gonna kill people today!" There is usually something leading up to that. Perhaps we could figure out why they are so angry and see if there is aything we can do to calm them down before they start blowing stuff up?

Also, I'm against the death penalty. Not because I think no one deserves it, some do, but because I think it is bad for society. Same with torure. Perhaps someone is bad enough to deserve recieving torture, but who will do the torturing? Doing stuff like that will clearly effect the person doing it. We should not put anyone in a position where it is expected of them to do such horrible things to another human being. And anyone voulunteering should be locked up - I wouldn't want people like that going loose..
