Do teenagers still go to... by SnappingTurtle2004-12-06 15:52:03
Not in Berkeley, sadly by Schol-R-LEA;2 2006-11-19 12:55:59
The last RHPS showing at the UC Theatre was early 1999 - after three troupes and 21 years of showings at that location - about two years later the theatre itself closed, probably for good at this point (though the two events are not related; the company that owned the theatre couldn't afford a necessary seismic refit). Both were real losses for the city, actually - Berkeley just isn't the same without that theatre, really.

The Barely Legal Players (the troupe that took over the Berkeley show in 1995 after Indecent Exposure disbanded) still run a weekly show at the Parkway Theatre in Oakland, but while the theatre is wonderful (it's set up like dinner theatre, with sofas and tables, and they sell pizza and beer as well as popcorn) it is quite small even by modern standards, and in a less than wonderful neighborhood with limited parking and public transit. Furthermore, they are quite strict about the age limits, or they were last time I went. The result is a much smaller and less rowdy show. They still do a good performance - better, in some ways, than in Berkeley - but it's definitely not the same. Not that I'm complaining - even when I was doing crew in '97, I was feeling like a dirty old man with all the teens around, and I would probably feel very uncomfortable at an Berkeley style show.
