LARTs Marketing department (again) by AndyA2004-12-06 17:21:53
Wow! Usually, marketeers overestimate (n/t) by nix2004-12-06 17:23:53
Overestimates are actually nicer. by AndyA 2004-12-06 17:33:14
OK so you end up stitting on stock and your cost per unit goes up since you don't get the volume discounts on parts but at least you keep customers happy.

When the estimate is too low you end up with mad panics because your supply chain just doesn't have enough parts. Some things have 16 week lead times to order, trying to double the quantity at short notice just isn't possible. This means engineering get pressed to qualify alternative parts or work around a part they can't get.
Assuming you can get the parts the manufacturing ramp up gets rushed before the people get used to the product and the testing procedure which means maintaing quality becomes a real problem.
Trust me, it's not fun.
