LOTR pet peeve by tesla_koil2004-12-06 09:03:59
To pass on some half-heard comparisons: by ChuckAB 2004-12-06 17:06:46
And as I'm thinking about them, they're reaching...

LOTR contained non-human races - one of which were the wizards. Humans did not become wizards. This made the story OK because there was no humans trying to become wizards - and wizards (as a race) do not exist in "our world".

Harry Potter was human trying to become a wizard and that's seen as a departure from the "all power is from God" concept. If it is power not from God, then it must be from the Devil and that's "wrong". And they saw something in the movie where a character is calling for a spirit to enter their being to influence something(?) and fear that by teaching this to real children opens the door to "evil influences". Now I've only seen bits and pieces of the Harry Potter films, but there seems to be a wizard "strain" that at least one of the girls is accused of being a "half-breed" ("mud-blood").

FWIW
