happens to get something wrong in the early assignments? Condemn hir to an early 'F'? If the assignments are independent, then a student can punt one yet still come back and pull out a passing grade. There's a lot to be said for the semester-long, integrated-project approach too. It kind of depends on what the educational goals of the particular course are.
