...I was holding back.

There is something more effective, cheaper and more readily available than sleeping pills - but illegal.

Marijuana. Small amounts of it. Don't mix it with alcohol. Don't use it to sleep too often or you may get dependant on it for sleep. Don't smoke it more than 15 minutes before bed time.

Falling asleep in your own bed, even with insomnia, is far easier than falling asleep in a jail cell. I am not suggesting this, mind you, merely pointing it out. I don't use it myself, but it may work for temporary insomnia. For chronic insomnia ( what I have), it'll just make things worse.
