I suggest you check out some configuration software like firestarter. A year ago I ran something like that on my ipmasq box and it worked great for a linux nub. Although I am not sure how much webmin does in terms of iptables you should still look into it(might be helpful with configuring outher stuff).

Also it is possible to run linux on some routers such as WRT54G (cheap linksys router/switch). While it might not be as easy to manage (because of limitation of software you can put on it) its a cool thing to consider.
