wiring conundrum... by deadweasle 2004-12-06 13:12:25

I need a little help on this one, when my brother-in-law had his house built he had the electrician build in the capability for every room to be networked. So the electrician ran Cat5 to every room. Well he's picking up 2 new PC's for the house and now wants to take advantage of the network capability, which is where I come in.

The fun part: The electrician used the Cat5 for the phone wiring so everything has a RJ11 jack sitting on one end and is wired together in a huge mass of wires in the basement. Now removing the phone jack and putting in an RJ45 instead should be easy the problem then is that means he's without his phones. So... I've seen voice/data splitters for Cat5 that use the extra pair of wires for the phone. Anyone know if there's a downside to using a setup like this with DSL? Phone lines interfering with the network type thing? I'm a programmer, networking isn't exactly my strong point.

Any advice or suggestions? Other than hide, change my phone number and move? Though it is tempting....
