them plastic router boxes (wether wireless or otherwise) use almost the same type of NAT that a linux kernel with iptables/ipchains uses. your resolv.conf (assuming it's real IPs of nameservers outside your network) will still work fine; NAT is transparent for the most part. (some plasticrouterboxes even run a very small version of the linux kernel).
however, anything that used to be able to directly connect to your computer ((g)aim filesharing, IRC transfers, p2p stuff) may or may not work, and may or may not need you to have him poke holes in the routerbox so that those ports get forwarded to your computer.
The only thing you should have to change on your machines is default gateway, pointing to the router's address (default is 192.168.1.1, IIRC) instead of your ISP's. The router will now get the DHCP addresses and you can statically assign IPs to your machines in the same subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4) or some if not most have an option to be a DHCP server for the inside network, so you may not have to change anything. |
