the switch/hub, and not the other way around? Then he'd be one to worry about the settings, not you...

In any case, it looks like you had a public IP for each PC before, since you didn't mention any routers in your original setup. I'd say, any router is better than no router... And if it's an 802.11g, then it likely has WPA encryption, which is secure enough.
