Wireless router and linux with dhcp question by celticess 2004-12-06 12:12:37
My roommate is buying a wireless router *cringe*(I've warned him about warchalking, etc but he says it has a built in firewall... then I cringed and told him it might mess with functionality of some programs).

Anyways I use dhcpd in linux and dhcp in win2k. There is a cable modem here... and the way my current setup is that works fine is:

my computer & my sons into the 10/100 switch -> hub ->cable modem

my roommate ->hub ->cable modem

Now my roommate wants to:

my computer & my sons -> 10/100 switch -> hub -> router -> cable modem

My roommate -> router -> cable modem

He's getting a linksys router(It's on sale at LondonDrugs for $123cdn)

Now I'm wondering. In linux I had to setup resolv.conf(I did this using knoppix and doing cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf) which of course has nameservers listed in it. I also setup the host file with the most current ip the dhcp had given me via ifconfig at the time.

Anyways... What the heck do I do when we go to the router? I don't want to lose my linux net connect but I'm not sure the resolv.conf will be right anymore. I think I can leave the host file alone but I'm not sure.

Help please as he's planning on sticking this freaking thing on the system in the next 2 hrs.
