buy G equipment. G works in the 2.4GHz range (at 54Mbps) and is backwards compatable with the most common, B which is also 2.4Ghz but runs at 11Mbps.

A is 54Mbps but runs at (IIRC) 5.6GHz and is not compatable with B or G.

Most laptops with built in wifi will be B, a portion of the newer ones G (and of course compatable with B) and very few will be A unless they were specifically ordered that way.

A will be rather expensive, G will only be 5-10% more than B, and will be more future-resistant (there's no such thing like future-proof, just like bulletproof is a misnomer) than buying the cheaper B stuff.

confused yet?
