it's probably 802.11g. Otherwise, it's probably 802.11b.

802.11g is backward compatable to 802.11b; 802.11a is a completely different protocol. Most 802.11g APs also support 802.11b. 802.11a is less common.

IIRC, 802.11b runs at 11 Mbps, while 802.11a abd 802.11g run at 55 Mbps.

Make sure to turn on all the security features on whatever you get (especially WEP), unless you want people sitting in the alley surfing kiddy-porn on your connection. And don't transmit anything sensitive without using some additional encryption.
