Question for gun UFies: by nedludd2004-12-06 10:14:04
  They're not by DesertRat66 2004-12-06 10:33:13
.38 Special --> .357 caliber bullet. Why are .38s actually closer to .36s instead of real .38s in the first place? Primarily because when people first started loading .36-caliber lead balls into self-contained metallic cartridges in the 19th century, the result could be chambered in bored-through .38-caliber cap and ball revolver cylinders. So the .38 designation actually refers more to chamber diameter than bore diameter.

.45 != .44 Magnum which uses a .429 caliber bullet. The .44 Magnum is the result of Elmer Keith's experimentation with a hot loaded .44 Special revolver. The .44 Special had all but gone the way of the dodo until Clint Smith and Smith and Wesson recently resurrected it in a new revolver.

The .45 Refers to a different caliber of guns and there are multiple .45 chamberings available: .45 Long Colt, .45 ACP, .451 Detonics, .45 Winchester Magnum, 454 Casull to name a few.
