Question for gun UFies: by nedludd 2004-12-06 10:14:04
(Technical, not Political)

Why is it that magnum rounds are of smaller caliber than their corresponding regular rounds? I.e.:
.38 -> .357 magnum
.45 -> .44 magnum
(doesn't hold for .22)
It seems like it would be a total pain for manufacturers to have to have two sets of tooling for nearly identical but not quite the same size barrels. Obviously, the chamber is totally (and by totally, I mean by more than a few thousandths of an inch) different, but it seems like an unecessary expense to have to maintain different tooling for the barrel as well. It's not as though the different calibers would prevent you from doing something bone-headed like loading the wrong ammo in a gun (the differences in chamber and action probably do though).

Any ideas?
