I don't own a gun and I don't have an alarm on the house. I'm also not particulary worried that someone will break in. The summers are spent with the doors open for air. Weather permitting, I do lock the doors when I go to sleep but that's out of habit since I spent six years living near Detroit.
In case you're wondering, I don't live out on a farm or something (I'd have a gun then, just for varmints). I live in a city in southern California. Granted I picked the nieghborhood carefully: nice 40 year old houses, a few old couples and some families with children. I don't expect there to be problems because I grew up in a very similar neighborhood.
All that said, I am glad for the first amendment. I like the fact that if I felt that I needed to protect myself I could buy a gun. It means that the bad guys have to worry that law abiding citizens *might* be armed. If only the criminals had guns, I be more worried.
Most of the "paranoia" that you see from the outside comes from the media and advertisers because they are trying to scare people into watching and buying, respectively.
While I think that DR is slightly paranoid, I'd be happy to have him as a neignbor. My neighborhood would be a bit safer and he knows enough about his weapons that he would not be dangerous to me.
What scares me most are the who don't know how to handle a gun having one as a security blanket. They are generally afraid of the weapon and usually somewhat ashamed to own one (it's a big secret). They tend to think that that scary hunk of metal is going to protect them from the scary bad men. They are the ones whose kids accidently shoot themselves or other people. They are also the ones who are most likely to wave a gun at someone because they are angry.
I wouldn't have to worry about DR waving a gun at me. If he was pointing a gun at me, it would be becasue I was threatening him or someone he cared about and I probably wouldn't have very long to worry about it. <grin>
