The old Acorn Archimedes had drivers on the expansion cards (podules) I believe. When the machine started up, it'd poll each of the sockets, and when it found a card it would initialise it, and ask it for it's drivers. Obviously, that meant the cards would only word with RiscOS on an Archimedes, but that's the price you pay...
