cab than normal - no biggie. If you are less than 5th floor, I think, the auto-brakes are on every floor. They may have changed the rules since I learned that. Basically big metal clamps that intercept the side flanges on falling 'vators. Stops ya dead cold if you don't fall from too high, and they break off and slow you down if you come from higher. Then the big spring at the bottom of the shaft helps a bit, but not as much as you might think.

If you go into freefall, LIE DOWN FLAT and cushion your head with anything softer than the floor.
