Just ignore them by defiler 2004-12-06 06:54:20
I tried posting this already, but my browser bombed :(

You can typically only hold a conversation (not a lecture) with maybe another 5 people at once. After that people start getting distracted, and talking to other groups of people. This is a useful lever. Pay attention to the 4 or 5 people you're actively ocnversing with, and ignore everyone else - they're just furniture. Just have your mind dress the room accordingly.

As long as you stay reasonably focussed on a small group, there should be little or no need to acknowledge that everyone else is there - just keep rotating your small group regularly. Then you can start having some fun.

Train your mind to dress everyone outside that group in stupid furry dog costumes or something. As long as you don't acknowledge to yourself that there are a lot of people there, you won't feel uncomfortable, so just imagine them as something silly and non-threatening.

Just make sure you have a vivid idea of how your mind is going to dress the other people. I like the furry dog costume thing - you can give them floppy ears, and awkward tails to trip over!

Practise on the way home tonight - you'll be the only person in London smiling on public transport :)
