There are still plenty of devices with insufficient storage -- my laptop for example. Plus, every time a vunerability was found in a common library, you'd have to update every single copy of it you had. A much better idea is Gentoo's SLOT system, where you can have multiple versions of a library installed if they have different APIs. I'd rather use my diskspace for Actual Data, thanks.
